Alberta has a 50% christian population of the 3 million living in the province. Because alchohol is very nessesary in christianity, domestic violence against women is very high. And thats really anywhere. Where theres alchohol, theres obviously christians, and where theres christians, theres the holy spirit operating in every one of them.
Search for yourselves. Alchohol is often directly related to women getting beat or rape. And this doesn't always apply to wives. It could be girlfriends too. Maybe even sisters or daughters. Hey its the christian faith. Anything can happen. Negative that is.
The Alberta Council of Women's Shelters is worried the economic downturn is contributing to more domestic violence in Edmonton.
"The boom is a bit of an accelerant for domestic violence as people turn more to drugs and alcohol,"said Jan Reimer, provincial co-ordinator for the organization.
"But you often see the same type of thing when the economy is in a nosedive. People are doing much the same thing, seeking solace in drugs and alcohol, and that's fuelling violence in the home."
The council released figures Tuesday that show Edmonton police responded to 1,451 spousal violence calls in the first quarter of this year, compared to 1,098 such calls in the last quarter of 2008.
"Thirty per cent is considerable," Reimer said.
But a police spokeswoman said the numbers should not be attributed to more violence, but rather to a new, more detailed data-collection system that has been implemented at EPS in the past year.
"They reflect the way we collect statistics, it doesn't mean there's an increase in the number of incidents," said spokeswoman Patrycia Thenu.
The department has also been working to raise awareness among officers about domestic violence and how to investigate such cases, she said.

I dont think many people care about an increase, the fact that it happens is bad enough.
